Cytology

The Eastside Pathology Cytology department services the Greater Eastside and Puget Sound region, as well as providing technical services to three local hospitals. Our primary goal is to provide quality services in a timely manner. Eastside Pathology has adopted the most relevant advances in the field of cytology and related gynecologic (GYN) testing. In 2003 EPI was the first laboratory in Washington State to adopt computer enhanced Imaging of the ThinPrep Pap.

Services provided to our clients include nongynecologic sample processing as well as Pap smear processing using ThinPrep®, SurePath® or Conventional Pap collection media. In addition, molecular testing from SurePath® or ThinPrep® media for diseases such as HPV, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea + HSV is available.

Eastside Pathology employs ASCP certified cytologists who are ASCP certified and qualify as supervisory level technologists. Additionally, several of our pathologists have board certification in Cytopathology.

Eastside Pathology is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and actively participates in several quality assurance programs. These include proficiency testing, correlation of all histology and cytology specimens, retrospective review of previously normal Pap smears of current high grade specimens, and quality control re-screen of at least 10% of normal Pap smears. All previous Pap smears of current high grade abnormal smears are reviewed. EPI also sends follow-up reminder letters to clinicians for all high grade cases that have not been re-submitted to Eastside Pathology.

To assist clinicians in tracking patient results, EPI provides monthly GYN summary reports.
